Does your clinic or small business need a website if you have Google Maps and WhatsApp?

By WebPalz · · 5 min read

Plenty of busy clinics and shops run on a Google Maps listing and a WhatsApp number, and do fine. So is a website worth it? Sometimes yes, sometimes not yet. Here’s how to tell.

We build websites, so you might expect us to say every business needs one. The more useful answer is to look at what each tool does well, where it falls short, and whether those gaps are costing you customers.

What your Google Maps listing does well

Your Google Business Profile, the listing that shows up on Maps, is often the first thing a nearby customer sees. It shows your location, opening hours, phone number, photos and reviews, and gives people directions in one tap. If you don’t have one, set it up before you think about a website. It’s free, and for “near me” searches it matters a lot.

Its limits:

  • Little room to explain. A dental clinic can’t really explain what an implant consultation involves, or which doctor is in on Thursdays, in a short description and a list of services.
  • You don’t fully control it. Customers can upload photos and suggest edits, and your listing appears right next to your competitors’.
  • It can’t hold documents. There’s nowhere for an admission form, a test-package list or a room tariff sheet.

What WhatsApp does well

For most local businesses in India, WhatsApp is where enquiries turn into bookings. It’s personal and quick, and customers already use it all day.

Its limits:

  • It only starts after someone messages you. WhatsApp can’t answer questions from people who haven’t decided to contact you yet.
  • The same questions, over and over. Timings, fees, location, “are you open Sunday?” Each reply takes time from you or your staff.
  • Nobody finds you there through search. Your catalogue and status updates don’t show up when someone searches on Google.

What a website adds

One link that answers the common questions

A website puts your services, timings, team, prices (if you want them shown), photos and location on one page you can share anywhere: in a WhatsApp reply, on your Maps listing, on a visiting card. Many people read before they call. The ones who do call are further along and easier to book.

A reason for people to trust you

This matters most when the decision feels risky. Patients want to check a doctor’s qualifications. Parents compare schools carefully. Tourists from another state booking a homestay in Mysore want more than a pin on a map. A clear, up-to-date website reassures them.

A channel you own

Platforms change their rules and layouts. Your website, on your own domain, stays the same until you decide to change it. It also gives your Google Business Profile somewhere useful to link to, and having the same name, address and phone number on both helps customers and search engines understand who you are.

For clinics in particular

Healthcare is where we see the gap most clearly. Patients often search a symptom or treatment, not a clinic name, and they want to know what happens at the first visit, who the doctor is and when they’re available. A Maps listing can’t hold that much. A short website with doctor profiles, timings and a “Book on WhatsApp” button can, and patients see the same timings on Maps and on the site. Our clinic websites page goes into more detail.

When you might not need one yet

  • Your customers are almost all regulars or walk-ins from the same street, and you’re already as busy as you want to be.
  • You can’t keep basic information current. An outdated website with old timings or prices can do more harm than none.
  • You haven’t set up and verified your Google Business Profile yet. Do that first.

How the three work best together

  1. Google Maps helps people nearby find you.
  2. Your website answers their questions and shows them why to choose you.
  3. WhatsApp turns that interest into a booking. Put a WhatsApp button on every page of the site, and link the site from your Maps listing.

Keep your name, address, phone number and hours identical in all three places, and update all three whenever something changes.
